A drug and alcohol prevention and recovery support system for the Seneca tribal community in New York State
Located in western New York State, Seneca Strong offers culturally informed peer outreach support to members of the Seneca Nation with alcohol and drug use disorders. It is operated by the Seneca Nation Health System, and includes three major components:
- peer outreach into the community to link those in need of recovery support to services such as housing, employment, education and access to treatment
- peer recovery guides, who work one-on-one with individuals struggling with addiction and trauma
- a recovery center that collaborates with law enforcement, hospitals, and clinics to generate referrals to the program
The program operates a drop-in recreation center and coordinates care with local support and 12 Step groups. It also offers parenting classes, job training, and prevention workshops that take into account the trauma specific to tribal populations. More information on the program can be found here.
The program has developed a comprehensive toolkit and action plan for Seneca tribal leaders on addressing addiction and promoting recovery.
