Based in Rhode Island, this non-profit company ships overdose rescue kits and naloxone throughout the United States
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids, in particular fentanyl, were involved in 80,411 overdose deaths in 2021 in the United States. Naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan, is effective in reversing the sometimes fatal effects of opioids, but needs to be available for administration immediately after an overdose occurs. The mission of NaloxBox, conceived in 2017 and operated by RIDMAT Inc, a non-profit agency located in Providence, Rhode Island, is to increase the availability of naloxone by supplying overdose rescue kits that it manufactures and ships throughout the United States. Kits have been installed in facilities such as city halls, universities, bus stations, donut shops, recovery houses, and homeless shelters.
A practice-oriented review of the program indicates that the rescue kits are easy to install, intuitive to use, and are perceived as a legitimate public health and safety amenity similar to fire extinguishers and defibrillators placed in public venues. As of 2021, NaloxBox had shipped over 825 units to 28 states and Puerto Rico, with locations determined by data on overdose incidents. The NaloxBox initiative serves as an effective model for building a system of readily community-access naloxone to prevent opioid overdose fatalities.
