Careers of Substance

A state initiative in Massachusetts that aims to build a strong and competent workforce to address substance use and addiction

Careers of Substance is a website developed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services with the aim of establishing a robust, competent, and skilled substance use and addiction workforce in the state across the continuum of care. The idea for this website grew out of a statewide workforce development strategic planning process representing a broad range of stakeholders.

This initiative recognizes that there is typically a shortage of the substance use and addiction workforce to meet demand, a lack of standardization in credentialing, and high turnover due to low wages. There is particular focus on individuals, organizations, and networking by providing these services:

  • The website serves as a hub for information on upcoming trainings and events, from educational seminars to continuing education to recovery coaching
  • There is a tool for employers to post jobs in the substance use field and for job seekers to see available jobs
  • Information and guidance on the right educational paths is provided to begin a career in the substance use field
  • A cross-collaboration tool is available for organizations to communicate and collaborate across the state
